You now have a choice to register .nz domain names with or without second level domains such as net.nz, .co.nz, .org.nz or .kiwi.nz. For example, you can now apply to register companyabc.nz, as well as companyabc.co.nz.
If you are interested in registering a shorter .nz version of a domain name, you may be eligible for Preferential Registration or Reservation (PRR) of the name depending on what domain names you have registered and what date your domain names were registered.
If you want to reserve or register a shorter .nz name by relying on PRR rights, you’ll need to move quickly as PRR rights expire at 1:00pm NZST on Monday, 30 March 2015.
To find out if you are eligible to rely on PRR rights to register or reserve a .nz name, you can check the status of your domain name by entering your Unique Domain Authentication Identifier (UDAI) on www.anyname.co.nz or contacting us to assist in this process.
You should be aware that owning a trade mark registration does not give you automatic entitlement to a shorter .nz name. However, where you believe you have rights in a .nz name that another party has registered, it may be possible to resolve the matter through the Domain Name Commission’s dispute resolution service.
What does your status mean?
- Available – you may apply to register the shorter .nz domain name on a first-in, best-dressed basis.
- Preferential Registration or Reservation – you may reserve or apply to register the shorter .nz domain name before anyone else.
- Reserved – the shorter .nz domain name has already been reserved by an eligible registrant.
- Conflicted – where the .nz name you wish to register has been registered in at least two second level domains (e.g. companyabc.co.nz and companyabc.net.nz), you will need to go through a conflict resolution process in order to determine who may register the shorter .nz name. Any unresolved disputes may be referred to the Domain Name Commission.
After 1:00pm NZST on 30 March 2015 all PRR rights expire and anyone may apply to register the shorter .nz version of your domain name.
