It has been recently reported that the University of Queensland and an Indigenous community in north-west Queensland have signed an agreement that will potentially lead to a new industry for producing carbon fibres made from a native Australian grass.

Researchers at the Australian Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) led by Professor Darren Martin have been working on using the native Australian grass Spinifex for producing the next generation of renewable and sustainable carbon fibres. The University of Queensland has filed patent applications on some of the discoveries and developments relating to this technology.
