Overview
With deep technical credentials and broad regional experience, Shan Sun is an Associate in the Chemical team at Spruson & Ferguson Asia, based in Singapore. A registered Trans Tasman patent attorney, he advises clients across a wide spectrum of chemistry related technologies, including pharmaceuticals, polymers, agricultural chemicals, mineral processing, chemical engineering, materials chemistry and energy systems.
Shan has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Southeast Asia and internationally, helping clients navigate complex technical subject matter with clarity and strategic insight.
His practice includes providing commercially focused guidance on freedom to operate, infringement and validity, oppositions, portfolio management and pharmaceutical patent term extensions (PTEs). He has also acted for multinational clients in contentious matters within the pharmaceutical and agricultural sectors.
Before entering the IP profession, Shan worked as a researcher in organic and supramolecular chemistry and later as a college lecturer. He holds a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Melbourne, along with a Master of Intellectual Property from the University of Technology Sydney.
Shan is also deeply committed to mentoring, sustainability and community engagement, and actively contributes to initiatives in these areas
