Research / Industry background

General technical areas:

  • Genetics and genomics
  • Biochemistry
  • Molecular biology
  • Microbiology

Honours research:

  • Investigated the role of ADCK3 in autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxia type 2 (ARCA2)

PhD research:

  • Characterised the first ataxia oculomotor apraxia type 2 (AOA2) mouse model and uncovered a role for senataxin in fertility and transcription regulation.
  • Investigated the role of senataxin in resolving DNA:RNA hybrids (R-loops).
  • Characterised neuronal iPSCs for AOA2 and generated a novel human disease model for identifying mechanism of pathology.

Postdoctoral experience:

  • Developed an anaplerotic therapy to relieve metabolic stress and restore mitochondrial function in Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) patients, showing significant clinical improvement in a Phase 2A/B trial.
  • Investigated how physiologically induced DNA double-strand breaks affect DNA repair in Purkinje cells of the cerebellum, particularly in the absence of ATM.
  • Conducted a pilot study on the role of oxidative damage caused by microorganisms in lung disease observed in A-T.
