Leading intellectual property (IP) firm Spruson & Ferguson will have a substantial presence in Greater China, following the announcement by its parent company, IPH Limited, of its acquisition of Ella Cheong (Hong Kong) Limited and its subsidiary Ella Cheong Intellectual Property Agency (Beijing) Company Limited.

From 1 November 2016 the Ella Cheong Hong Kong and Beijing businesses have been rebranded as Spruson & Ferguson, and their team of more than 50 people have joined Spruson & Ferguson’s Asia-Pacific operations.

With the addition of the new Hong Kong and Beijing offices, Spruson & Ferguson now has eight offices across the Asia-Pacific region and a combined team of more than 350 people.

Spruson & Ferguson CEO, Dr Andrew Blattman said the acquisition furthers the firm’s vision to provide a one-stop IP protection service in the Asia-Pacific region:

“China is one of the fastest growing IP markets in the world. By integrating the Ella Cheong Hong Kong and Beijing offices into Spruson & Ferguson’s business, we will broaden our IP service offering in Greater China,” he said.

“We are pleased to welcome the Hong Kong and Beijing teams to Spruson & Ferguson.”

Spruson & Ferguson has had a long association with Ms Ella Cheong, who was a joint venture partner of Spruson & Ferguson in Singapore and Malaysia from 2001 to 2012.

“The Hong Kong and Beijing businesses, led by Coral Toh and Wubin Yan, have provided IP services in Greater China for many years and are highly respected practices. We look forward to building on this business and continuing to deliver, to new and existing clients, the high quality IP services for which Spruson & Ferguson is renowned,” said Dr Blattman.

Ms Ella Cheong will cease to be involved in the businesses and will no longer practice in the areas of patents, design and trade mark prosecution in China and the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau. The remaining director Principals and all other staff will remain with the businesses.
