Overview

Elizabeth joined Spruson & Ferguson’s Chemical/Life Sciences group in 2008, where she specialises in the field of pharmaceuticals.

Elizabeth assists numerous local and international clients, particularly pharmaceutical companies, in various aspects of Australian and New Zealand patent practice, including drafting, prosecution, oppositions, patentability/validity opinions and freedom to operate advice. She also has experience in securing extensions of term on pharmaceutical patents. Elizabeth also works closely with the firm’s associated legal practice in respect of infringement and revocation proceedings in Court.

In recognition of her expertise, Elizabeth was included in the 2022 IAM Patent 1000 rankings where it was noted “another crucial member of the chemical and life sciences team is chemistry doctorate Barrett, who is a percipient adviser on a wide range of pharmaceutical-related prosecution matters.” Since 2021 Elizabeth has also been named in the Managing Intellectual Property IP Stars rankings.

Elizabeth completed a Bachelor degree in Advanced Science specialising in organic chemistry at the University of Sydney, graduating with First Class Honours and a University Medal. She was awarded a PhD for her research in the area of synthetic supramolecular chemistry at the Research School of Chemistry at the Australian National University in 2004.

After completing her PhD, Elizabeth was the recipient of a Skaggs Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, USA. Her postdoctoral research focused on the synthesis of functionalised capsules and an investigation into their dynamic self-assembly. She has published a number of peer-reviewed research articles in international journals and has presented at numerous scientific conferences and meetings.

Elizabeth is a registered Australian and New Zealand Patent Attorney, as well as a registered Australian Trade Mark Attorney. She is a Fellow of The Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia and a Member of The Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand.
