Dr. David Tso
David brings his real-world experience of how new Chemistry is developed and exploited in a commercial context to his role at Spruson & Ferguson. After completion of his PhD, David spent three years as a Research and Development Chemist at Dulux, one of the world’s best-known paint brands. He worked to identify and deliver innovative new technologies for superior paint properties, with a constant eye on their commercial value and profitability. His regular contact with customers and suppliers during this process of testing and development gave him a practical appreciation for how science and business mix.
Prior to this, David completed a PhD in Physical Organic Chemistry at the University of Melbourne, focussing on the synthesis and study of beta-silyl carbenium ions. He has also studied Commercialisation at the Melbourne Business School, as well as undertaking external courses with the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University and the California Institute of Technology.
David’s experience of cutting edge chemistry in a commercial environment is critical to his work as an attorney, helping him to identify the most profitable innovations in a client’s portfolio, and develop approaches to most efficiently protect them. David uses this knowledge in his patent drafting, filing applications and prosecution skills as well as searching, filings, oppositions and other intellectual property matters.
