David completed a Bachelor of Engineering (chemical) with honours along with a Bachelor of Science majoring in physics from the University of Newcastle. To register as a Patents and Trade Marks Attorney, he completed post graduate studies in intellectual property law at the University of Technology Sydney, and the University of Melbourne where he received the Frank Pinkerton Scholarship for achieving first place in his patent drafting class. David’s honours thesis included researching ignition properties of thin films used as filter media in steels mills. This project involved designing a novel testing procedure and led to reduced operational costs and unscheduled down time in a commercial steel mill.
David joined Spruson & Ferguson as an associate after spending five years in the Patent Attorney profession at another leading IP firm. During that time, David begun to focus his practice on the mechanical arts, with particular experience in the mining, medical devices and pump industries.
Prior to entering the patent profession, David worked as an engineer in a variety of roles, including hands-on engineering experience in designing and commissioning capital projects in the chemical and iron and steel industries, performing mathematic modelling and technology reviews of novel technologies in mining and metallurgical fields, and working as a research engineer in the oil and gas as well as combustion physics fields.
David works with local and international clients in prosecuting both patent and design applications, preparing validity and infringement opinions and drafting patent specifications in a broad range of industries including mining, automotive, process engineering, medical devices, locks, pumps and construction technologies. David has a particular interest in helping his local clients understand the patent system and add value to their business by obtaining robust intellectual property protection.
David is a member of both the Institute of Patent Attorneys of Australia (IPTA) and the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand (IPSANZ).
