24 January 2014, Shanghai, China - Spruson & Ferguson is pleased to announce the continued expansion of its presence in Asia with the opening of its representative office in Shanghai, China.
Spruson & Ferguson is the first Australian IP firm to open an office in China. The China office reflects the newest addition to Spruson & Ferguson’s expanding presence in the Asia-Pacific region, and complements Spruson & Ferguson’s well established position in Southeast Asia.

China is an important growth area for Spruson & Ferguson. Our Shanghai team has the local knowledge and expertise to offer our clients quality patent services, fully supported by our 300 staff in Singapore and Australia” says Mr David Griffith, Managing Principal and Chairman of the group.
European and German qualified patent attorney, Dr Oliver Lutze, is the firm’s Chief Representative in Shanghai. Dr Lutze brings with him a wealth of experience, including over 15 years as Senior Patent Counsel for a German multinational company and over 5 years in China leading the IPR function for the same multinational. He comments “I am very excited to play a role in expanding Spruson & Ferguson’s China activities. Our China office further increases our support capabilities for clients in Asia with regard to their IP protection needs in one of the most relevant markets globally.”
The office was officially opened on Thursday 23 January with an opening ceremony followed by a reception attended by some of China’s leading IP counsel from the pharmaceutical, biotech and consumer goods sectors.
