Recent Statistics on Operations at the US PTO

Please find attached a presentation from the Patent Public Advisory Committee Quarterly Meeting that was held this month, containing recent statistics on patent operations at the US PTO.

It is interesting to note that the Forward Looking Pendency report suggests that the average time before first Office Action is leveling off at around 16 months (based on estimated current and projected workload and resource levels). The data also suggests that it seems that more time is being spent by Examiners doing interviews, with an increase in hours year on year and that Track One examination continues to be a popular choice to expedite the examination of a patent application. The reports on Quality Composite indicate an increase in the continuous quality management at the PTO with a target of a 100% Quality Composite score targeted for 2015.
