Dr. Martin O’Brien
Martin O’Brien is a Principal of the firm, specialising in molecular biology and biotechnology. His practice primarily involves drafting and prosecuting patent applications, as well as considerable involvement in patent opposition matters, predominantly in the fields of biotechnology and biochemistry.
After obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree with First Class Honours, majoring in biochemistry and genetics, Martin was awarded a PhD from the University of Sydney. He undertook postdoctoral research at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Sydney, investigating the genetics of alcohol metabolism and alcohol dependence, and joined Spruson & Ferguson in 1998.
Martin is a member of the Australian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a member of the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand. Martin is the co-author of a number of refereed scientific reports in international journals and has presented seminars on intellectual property issues.
